And what kind of boat would you build if your friend was stranded with you so you could have a 2 man crew to control it?

Assuming you have basic tools , like a machete, and native materials (palms, vines, mangrove, etc,) and a bit of fabric (clothing), and the ability to make a fire, then a Polynesian dugout canoe with outrigger and sail .
